The dollar moved slightly lower against the euro on Thursday as investors awaited a highly anticipated speech by Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen on Friday.

The euro bought $1.1281 late Thursday in New York, compared with from $1.1263 late Thursday.

Elsewhere, the pound fell to $1.3175 late Thursday, compared with $1.3232 late Wednesday in New York, breaking a three-day winning streak.

The ICE dollar index ended flat at 94.7490.

Meanwhile, the greenback strengthened slightly against the yen after official data showed the pace of layoffs in the U.S. continued to decline last week. Also, orders for durable goods produced in the U.S. surged 4.4% in July. The buck bought ¥100.56 late Thursday, up slightly from ¥100.44 late Wednesday in New York.

Yellen is set to headline the Kansas City Fed�s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo., delivering a speech Friday at 10 a.m. Eastern.

U.S. stocks finished lower Thursday as Federal Reserve officials hinted that a rate increase may be warranted sooner than investors previously expected.

The S&P 500 slid 0.1%, or 3 points, to 2,172, as health care emerged as the index’s worst-performing sector, driven by a sharp drop in Mylan N.V. The Dow industrials shed 0.2%, or 31 points, to 18,449, its lowest closing level since early August. UnitedHealth Group Inc. was the blue-chip gauge’s worst performer. The Nasdaq Composite index fell 0.1%, or 6 points, to 5,212.

Later Thursday morning, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Robert Kaplan said the case is strengthening for a rate increase in the not-so-distant future. He also called on lawmakers, during an interview on CNBC, to come up with fiscal policies that might boost the economy.

Ultraloose monetary policy has been supportive of stocks� multiyear rise and investors have been worried that higher rates might result in a stock-market drop.
