Oil held losses near $53 a barrel with U.S. stockpiles forecast to grow amid a revival in shale drilling.

Futures rose 0.3 percent in New York after falling 1.5 percent Monday, the biggest daily loss in more than two weeks. U.S. crude inventories probably rose by 2.5 million barrels last week, according to a Bloomberg survey of analysts before an Energy Information Administration report Wednesday. U.S. producers boosted the number of rigs drilling for crude last week to the most since October 2015, according to Baker Hughes Inc.

West Texas Intermediate for March delivery rose 17 cents to $53.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 10:46 a.m. in Sydney. The grade slipped 82 cents to close at $53.01 on Monday. Total volume traded was about 74 percent below the 100-day average.

Brent for April settlement fell $1.09, or 1.9 percent, to $55.72 a barrel on the London-based ICE Futures Europe exchange on Monday. The global benchmark crude closed at a $2.09 premium to April WTI.
