Japanese shares fell as the failure of a referendum on constitutional reform in Italy spurred concern that the European country and the broader region will be destabilized.

The Topix index dropped 0.7 percent as of 9:02 a.m. in Tokyo, while the yen traded little changed against the dollar. Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who had been pushing hard for the reform, said he�ll resign as exit polls showed he�d been defeated in the Sunday vote. The news comes after Japanese stocks climbed to the highest since January last week, propelled by expectations for a pickup in U.S. economic growth.

South Korea�s Kospi dropped 0.3 percent.
